Most workplace disputes that reach a labour officer could have been avoided: a contract that was never written down, a hearing that skipped a step, a retrenchment that ignored the notice rules. This course gives you a working command of Zimbabwean labour law, so you can make decisions that are fair, lawful and defensible.

It is designed for HR practitioners, line managers, business owners, union and workers’ committee representatives, and anyone who handles employment matters. The first lesson of each module covers the basics, so newcomers can follow. The rest goes into the procedures and judgement calls that experienced practitioners deal with every day.

What you will learn

  • How the Constitution, the Labour Act [Chapter 28:01], statutory instruments, collective bargaining agreements and codes of conduct fit together
  • How to draft and manage contracts: types of contract, probation, notice, leave and fixed-term renewals
  • How to run a fair disciplinary process under a registered code or the National Employment Code of Conduct (SI 15 of 2006)
  • How termination and retrenchment work after the Labour Amendment Act No. 11 of 2023 and SI 191 of 2024
  • How unions, workers’ committees, NECs, conciliation, arbitration and the Labour Court work together

How the course works

There are five modules, each with four lessons and a short quiz. You need 70% on each quiz to complete the course and earn your certificate.

Important

This course explains the law as at October 2026 for training purposes. It is not legal advice. Labour law changes through amendments, regulations and court decisions, so check the current position, and take legal advice on specific cases.

About figures in this course

Rates, thresholds, time limits and penalties are shown as examples of the law as at 2026, not fixed rules, and are expected to change. Lessons focus on principles and procedures, worked examples are labelled as 2026 figures for illustration, and the figures are collected in one Course reference table at the end of the final lesson. Always confirm the current position through official channels such as the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, your NEC, the Government Gazette or a registered labour law practitioner.
